There was tension in Onitsha following the murder of a 27-year-old man at the Niger River bridgehead in Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was established that one of the soldiers at his checkpoint at the bridgehead shot the boy as he pulled the trigger to fire in the air before the bullet hit the boy.

A witness who does not want to be mentioned said soldiers were chasing and smashing the mirrors of utility vehicles driving one way across the bridge when the incident occurred.

“As the soldiers tried to prevent motorists from driving in one direction. They were running to get away, one of the soldiers took out his gun and shot in the air but the bullet hit one of the tax collectors who was on the other side of the road and killed him on the shot.

“The killing of the boy wanted to cause a problem because many shopkeepers and other passers-by mobilized to attack the soldiers, but they called for reinforcements from the barracks and they brought more soldiers and armored personnel carriers to the premises.

“Quick intervention by a senior army officer, a major and the Onitsha Police Zone Commander saved the day and the soldier was taken away,” the source said.

It was gathered that the boy’s corpse was probably taken away to be deposited at the morgue.

Security was tightened at the beachhead as many security guards were stationed there to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
