DVIDS – News – Army Reserve Division Welcomes First Senior African-American Enlisted Woman

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, NJ – Command Sgt. Maj. Subretta L. Pompey became the chief of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division April 8 during an assumption of responsibility ceremony at the division’s headquarters here.

Pompey is the first African American and the first woman to hold this position in the 99th’s 80-year history, which dates back to the 99th Infantry Division during World War II.

“To be selected as the command sergeant major of the 99th Readiness Division is very humbled,” said Pompey, who served in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1991, Bosnia from 1999-2000, from Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006 to 2007 and Operation Spartan. Shield of 2019-2020. “It’s something I thought about and kept in mind a while ago, but I didn’t think it would happen in a million years. Today, I’m proud, honored and excited about this tremendous opportunity.

The ceremony was presided over by Maj. Gen. Rodney L. Faulk, commanding general of the 99th RD, which is responsible for providing geographic programs and services that enhance individual and unit readiness for mobilization and the deployment of Army Reserve forces located throughout the 99th RD’s 13-state region.

“I have no doubt that CSM Pompey will add tremendous value to the team in its mission as CSM of the 99th Readiness Division,” Faulk said. “I am confident that we will continue to find innovative ways to strengthen preparedness by working with our partners across the region.”

“Shift. General Faulk, thank you for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to serve as a command sergeant major,” said Pompey, whose previous assignment was command sergeant major for the U.S. Army Reserve. Legal Command. “It’s just an amazing opportunity, and I’m looking forward to my new journey here at the 99th Prep Division.”

Pompey, who served in the military for more than 30 years, succeeded Sgt. Maj. Sandra M. Cook, who recalled her feelings when she first had the opportunity to serve in this acting role as Acting Senior Chief of the 99th RD.

“I was both humbled and honored and, to be honest, a little intimidated,” said Cook, whose next posting will take her to US Army Reserve Command. “But as the commanding general brought me under his mentorship and direction, my intimidation quickly faded as we began to assemble a command team and provide direction and guidance to the force, the times for the 99th RD and the units we support throughout the region.”

“During his short time as CSM (acting) for the 99th, I was truly impressed with his energy, drive, knowledge and skill,” Faulk said. “She genuinely cares about the soldiers and ensures that we uphold the highest standards of the NCO corps.”
